Being born and raised in the Philippines, I grew up in a multilingual environment where English is not only a school subject but also an official language used in education and professional settings. Speaking Filipino, a local language, and English taught me early on that language is a means to connect with people, understand societies, and engage with the world.
My interest in English began when I was in elementary school and deepened through campus journalism in high school, where I wrote about social issues and represented my school in writing competitions. These experiences sparked my curiosity about global affairs and inspired my dream of pursuing an international career. This led me to pursue a communication degree in university, where I honed my communication skills while developing a deeper understanding of communication as a driver of social change. Through classes, internships, student leadership, student organizations, and experiences as a TV news anchor and radio reporter, I came to understand that communication is most meaningful when it empowers people and communities.
These experiences have shaped both my academic career and research. With an interdisciplinary background spanning communication, governance, disaster management, and sustainable development, I am interested in how communication can address real-world challenges in increasingly complex, diverse, and interconnected societies. As a scholar whose undergraduate and master’s degrees were supported by the Philippine government and whose doctoral studies were funded by the Japanese government, I aspire to contribute to the development of both countries and serve as a bridge between them. My master’s research examined local economic development in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. My doctoral research focuses on the impacts of disasters on local governments in the Philippines. These research findings have been translated into lectures and capacity-building interventions for local governments in the Philippines and Asia, reflecting my commitment to connecting academic knowledge with practical application.
At NUFS, I aim to help students realize that English is more than a language test score. It is a tool for connecting across cultures and contributing to society. In my classes, students discuss content-based topics, including local and global issues and intercultural understanding. I believe that language learning is most effective when students actively engage with their interests, future goals, and issues happening around the world. Therefore, my classes are designed to strengthen students’ English communication skills while developing intercultural competence, creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking.
As an educator, I guide my students’ learning, yet I have been surprised by how deeply teaching has transformed my own. While incorporating the Sustainable Development Goals into my classes, I became inspired to practice sustainability beyond the classroom by upcycling vintage Japanese kimonos into contemporary, culturally fused clothing and accessories. This initiative is also a love story between my Japanese husband and me, shaped by our desire to honor both cultures through intentional design. Unexpectedly, this work has been featured in Japan, and has received coverage from various media outlets in the Philippines and internationally. In many ways, these experiences feel like coming full circle, reconnecting me with my early aspirations as a high school and university student interested in English, media, and communication. Moreover, I am honored to receive a commendation from the House of Representatives of the Philippines, acknowledging my efforts in promoting sustainable fashion, Filipino creativity, and meaningful cultural connections between the Philippines and Japan. This recognition strengthened my belief that education, research, and creative practice can work together to create social impact beyond the classroom.
My goal as an educator and researcher is to create learning environments where students develop not only language proficiency but also the confidence, global perspective, and sense of responsibility needed in a globalized world. Through research, teaching, and community engagement, I hope to demonstrate how communication can connect people and cultures while empowering the next generation of global citizens.
To my students, learning is an exciting journey of discovering yourself as much as the world. There will be difficult moments, but every mistake shows that you are trying, and every redirection means that you are moving forward. Create your own path and progress at your own pace. Along the way, you will meet invaluable people who will broaden your perspectives and help you become the person you aspire to be. 好奇心と勇気とともに、学び続ける

私はフィリピンで生まれ育ちました。フィリピンでは英語は学校の科目であるだけでなく、教育や仕事の場で使われる公用語のひとつです。フィリピノ語と地域の言語、そして英語の間を行き来しながら育つうちに、言語とは人とつながり、社会を理解し、世界と関わるための手段なのだと、自然に感じるようになりました。
英語が好きになったのは小学生の頃です。高校では学内の新聞活動に打ち込み、社会問題について記事を書いたり、学校代表として作文コンクールに出場したりするうちに、その思いはますます強くなりました。世界の出来事への好奇心が育ち、いつか国際的な仕事がしたいという夢を持つようになったのも、この頃です。大学ではコミュニケーション学を専攻し、コミュニケーションの技術を磨きながら、コミュニケーションこそが社会を変える力になるのだと学びました。授業やインターンシップ、学生団体でのリーダー経験に加え、テレビのニュースキャスターやラジオレポーターも務めるなかで、気づいたことがあります。コミュニケーションが本当に意味を持つのは、それが人や地域を元気にするときだ、ということです。
こうした経験の積み重ねが、いまの研究につながっています。私の専門はコミュニケーション、ガバナンス、災害対策、SDGs にまたがっており、複雑さと多様性を増しながらつながりを深めていく社会のなかで、コミュニケーションがどのように現実の課題解決に役立つのかに関心を持っています。学部と修士課程ではフィリピン政府、博士課程では日本政府の奨学支援を受けて学んできた者として、自分の研究が両国の発展に貢献し、二つの国を結ぶ架け橋になれたらと願っています。修士課程では愛知県の地域経済開発を研究し、博士課程では災害がフィリピンの地方自治体に与える影響をテーマに研究を続けています。その成果はフィリピンやアジアの自治体職員向けの講義・研修にも活かされています。研究を机の上で終わらせず、実践につなげたい。それが私の一貫したこだわりです。
名古屋外国語大学で私が学生に伝えたいのは、英語は試験の点数のためのものではない、ということです。英語は、文化の違いを越えてつながり、社会に貢献するための道具です。私の授業では、地域や世界の課題、異文化理解といったテーマを、学生自身が英語で議論します。言語の学びがいちばん深まるのは、学生が自分の興味や将来の目標、そして世界で起きている問題に本気で向き合うときだと思うからです。英語のコミュニケーション力と一緒に、異文化を理解する力、創造性、協働する力、批判的に考える力も伸ばせるよう、授業を組み立てています。
教育者として、私は学生の学びを導く立場です。けれども、教えることが自分自身の学びをこれほど深く変えるとは、思ってもみませんでした。授業でSDGs(持続可能な開発目標)を扱ううちに、教室の外でも自分でサステナビリティを実践してみたいと思うようになり、ヴィンテージの着物を、現代的で、日本とフィリピンの文化が溶け合った服や小物へとアップサイクルする活動を始めました。実はこの取り組み、日本人の夫と私のラブストーリーでもあります。二つの文化への敬意をデザインというかたちにしたい。そんな私たち夫婦の思いから生まれたものだからです。うれしい驚きだったのは、この活動が日本国外でもフィリピン内外のさまざまなメディアで紹介されたことです。英語とメディアとコミュニケーションに夢中だった高校・大学時代の自分に、ぐるりと一周して戻ってきたような、不思議な感覚があります。さらに光栄なことに、サステナブルファッションの推進やフィリピンの創造性の発信、日本とフィリピンの文化的なつながりづくりへの貢献が評価され、フィリピン共和国下院から表彰をいただきました。教育と研究と創造的な実践は、組み合わされば教室を越えた社会的インパクトを生み出せる。この経験は、その確信を深めてくれました。教育者・研究者としての私の目標は、学生が語学力だけでなく、グローバル社会を生きるための自信と広い視野、そして責任感を育てられる学びの場をつくることです。研究、教育、そして地域社会との関わりを通して、コミュニケーションが人と文化を結ぶ力を、グローバル社会の一員となる次世代の能力開発につなげていきます。
学生のみなさんへ。学ぶことは、世界を発見すると同時に、自分自身を発見する、わくわくする旅です。困難に直面する瞬間はきっとあります。でも、間違いはすべて挑戦している証拠ですし、回り道はすべて前に進んでいる証拠です。自分だけの道をつくり、自分のペースで進んでください。旅の途中では、あなたの視野を広げ、なりたい自分へと導いてくれる、かけがえのない人たちにも出会えるはずです。私自身の旅は英語への興味から始まり、好奇心と、学び続ける勇気に支えられて、いまも続いています。みなさんも、好奇心と勇気を持って、学びの旅を続けてください。この旅を、一緒に楽しみましょう!
