Adventures in Language and Beyond

I first came to Japan when I was twenty-six years old. I had just graduated from university in Canada and was looking for my next adventure. Being accepted on a teaching exchange program and based in rural Gifu prefecture, I was faced with the challenges of learning a new language and culture, but also the excitement of making friends and enjoying nature.
My relationship with challenges and adventure started when I was sixteen years old, travelling the world with my older brother and parents. For one year, we explored parts of Europe, Africa, and Asia. We visited museums, parks, and cathedrals in Europe and studied ancient ruins and wildlife in Africa. The memories of experiences made in those parts of the world will remain with me forever. It was not until we got to Asia that I really started to become interested in learning about different places and cultures. In fact, I would make two additional trips, each of about six months in duration, back to Asia. Once with my friend when I was twenty-one and another with my brother when I was twenty-three.
Over twenty years later, living with my wife and three children in Nagoya, the challenges and adventures continue. My interests range from repairing and riding bicycles, to building and fixing things around the house, to visiting historical places throughout Japan.
In the School of Contemporary International Studies, I primarily teach courses relating to either building English language skills such as listening, speaking, and critical thinking, or topics relating to my interest in sustainable development. I enjoy the challenge of helping students understand interesting topics like gender inequality, biodiversity loss, or cross-cultural understanding. I am also committed to aiding students in getting the most out of study abroad programs. Study abroad is one of the best ways for young adults to improve their language skills, gain an appreciation for different cultures, and make personal connections with new people.
There are many opportunities as a student at NUFS to grow personally and professionally. It is important to be curious about the world and our position in it. Language development is an indispensable process that enables us to make sense of it all. Let our adventures begin.

言語の冒険とその先

私が初めて日本に来たのは26歳のとき、カナダの大学を卒業したばかりで次の冒険を探していた頃でした。私は、JETプログラム（小・中学校で外国語教育を行う）を通して、岐阜県の郊外にやってきたのですが、そこで新しい言語と文化を学ぶことの難しさに直面すると同時に、新しく友人を作ることや、自然を満喫する楽しさも味わいました。
私の「挑戦」と「冒険」は、16歳のときに兄と両親と世界を旅したときに始まりました。私たちは１年間、ヨーロッパやアフリカ、アジアのあちこちを探検しました。ヨーロッパでは博物館や公園、大聖堂を訪れ、アフリカでは古代遺跡や野生動物について学びました。そしてアジアを訪れた時、異なる場所や異文化について学びたいと興味を持つようになりました。その後、私は６か月にわたってアジアを回る旅を２度しました。１度目は、２１歳のときに友人と、２度目は２３歳のときに兄とでした。世界各地で得た思い出は、いつまでも私の心に残っています。
それから２０年以上が経ち、名古屋で妻と３人の子供たちと暮らしている今でも、「挑戦」と「冒険」は続いています。私の趣味は、自転車の修理やサイクリング、自宅の改修や修理、さらに日本各地の歴史的な場所を訪れることなど、多岐にわたります。
現代国際学部では、主にリスニング、スピーキング、クリティカルシンキングといった英語力向上を図る授業や、私が興味を持っている持続可能な開発をテーマにした授業も担当しています。ジェンダーの不平等、失われゆく生物多様性、異文化理解などの興味深いトピックを学生が理解できるように手助けするという「挑戦」を私は楽しんでいます。また、私は学生が留学プログラムを最大限に活用できるようサポートもしています。留学は、若い世代が語学力を向上させ、異文化を理解し、新しい人々とのつながりを築くための最良な方法のひとつです。
本学の学生には、個人的にも専門的にも成長できる機会がたくさんあります。世界と、世界の中の自分について興味を持つことは大切です。語学力を伸ばすことは、そのすべてを理解するための不可欠なプロセスです。さあ、「冒険」を始めましょう。
