CIS Special Lecture B (2018.7.9) Guest speaker: Minister and Deputy Head of Mission Ms. Nadia Burger
Title:A Diverse Society, the Canadian Experience

Ms. Nadia Burger, a Canadian diplomat, and Mr. Ikuo Kameyama, NUFS President,
discussed Canada’s diversity and inclusion policies, including with respect to Indigenous peoples.ナディア・ブルジェーカナダ大使館首席公使は名古屋外国語大学の亀山郁夫学長と、カナダの多様性と先住民族に関するものを含む、インクルージョン政策について議論した。

Canada’s economy remains strong even though its population is aging. Canada’s experience with immigration is very positive and a source of Canada’s success.カナダの人口は高齢化しているにもかかわらず、カナダ経済は堅調である。カナダは移民政策については大変積極的で、それがカナダの成功の源である。

Many people think of Canada in terms of its natural beauty, but the lecture focused on three important aspects of Canada and its polices:
immigration, gender equality and Indigenous people. In Canada, Indigenous peoples and their voices are important. Canada’s prime minister has publicly apologized to Indigenous Peoples for mistakes of the past. The Canadian government is committed to a renewed relationship with
Indigenous Peoples, one based on the recognition of rights, respect, co-operation, and partnership.

Ms. Burger was pleased to answer more than 10 questions not only from citizens of Nagakute but students of NUFS. She was impressed by the quality of the well-researched questions. She had engaging conversations with NUFs students after the lecture. ブルジェーさんは10個以上の質問が学生や市民らから出て喜んでいた。事前研究の成果か、質問の内容に感心した。講義の後、学生と談笑。

Student Report 2 (Ms. Tamaki Ito, sophomore of the Department of Liberal Arts and Global Studies)
Canada is one of the famous countries where many Japanese students want to study. I got a lot of information about Canada from today’s presentation.
First, I was quite surprised to hear that Ms. Nadia Burger, Minister and Deputy Head of Mission in Japan, is not a native English speaker. Her mother tongue is French. She told us that she has been learning English since she went to university. Canada adopts two official languages, English and French, and some people who live in the east of Canada cannot speak English.
Second, Canada is a country which has accepted many immigrants, which I had already known before entering university. Four years ago, when I went to Canada in my school trip and stayed at a Canadian home. I still do not have any idea where my host family is from, but my friend’s family is from China, and other friends’ are from Italy. A friend of mine who stayed with a family from China said that she ate Chinese food every day. When I went to the language school, I met a teacher and tutor from the United States. That was my first time to experience a diverse society. Recently, the Canadian population has been increasing because of an increase in the number of immigrants. There are many more immigrants from Asian countries such as China, Korea, and the Philippines, not European countries.
I hope Japan will follow Canada’s policy. In Japan, gender inequality is one of the most serious problems. In Japan, there are not many female Diet members, much less female Cabinet members. The ratio of men to women in the Canadian cabinet, however, is 50 to 50. Over 80% of the women’s population is working. It is not easy to become such a country as Canada which has accepted many immigrants and refugees from all over the world and is trying to solve problems from gender inequality. However, this is the one of the good ways to make people happy.
