Emergency Student Support due to the Spread of the New Coronavirus Infection

In response to the recent spread of the new coronavirus infection, Nagoya University of Foreign Studies has recently introduced online distance learning courses to reduce the risk of infection. In the meantime, our faculty members have speeded up their preparations for online classes, while at the same time, the university has carried out a survey of students' PC and communication environments. As a result of this survey, it was found that a number of students do not have an adequate environment for taking online classes. In addition, the new coronavirus pandemic has caused a significant decrease in the income of their parents together with a loss of part-time job income, which in turn is causing a strain on family budgets. In view of these current situations, we would like to inform you that we have come up with and decided to provide the following four measures of emergency student support.

[Four Measures of Emergency Student Support]
Special Support Measure #1: Special benefit scholarship of 50,000 yen All students (including graduate students) will be provided with a subsidy of 50,000 yen to purchase equipment (PCs, Wi-Fi devices, etc.) and to prepare their communication environment necessary for taking online classes. We aim to make payment as soon as possible, and in the near future we will inform you of the payment method through the Portal system.

Special Support Measure #2: Lending of PC Computers For students (including graduate students) who do not have a PC, the university will procure PCs (Windows specification) and lend them to students for free until March, 2021. Regarding the lending procedure, we will give priority to first-year students since they are required to use web teaching materials with Windows specification in compulsory courses. In due course, we will try our best to respond to requests from second year and above students based on the numbers of the computers we hold. Details of the lending of PCs will be announced again through the Portal system.

Special Support Measure #3: Special measures for emergency financial assistance (tuition reduction and exemption) Due to the worsening economic conditions (job losses, bankruptcies, etc.) caused by the new coronavirus pandemic, the budget will allow for double the amount of students who can be eligible for the special emergency financial aid measure (half of the first semester's tuition will be reduced), which is intended to support the continuation of schooling in the event of a sudden change in family finances or difficulty in paying tuition on their own.

Support Measure #4: Extension of the deadline for deferment of school payments for the first semester Traditionally, the deadline for deferment of school fees for the first semester is the end of July, but this deadline has been changed to the end of August, a one month extension.

As soon as possible, we will implement the four measures of the Emergency Student Support Program.
It is quite regrettable that I cannot provide you with an environment to study on the university campus at present, however it is for the purpose of preventing the spread of the new coronavirus. I expect that you will do your best for your studies until we can see each other once again hopefully in the near future on campus.
