【Important】Towards Guidelines for Countermeasures on the New Coronavirus

Dear Students, Faculty and Staff Members
Arrangements of the upcoming spring/summer courses in 2020

With the spread of the new coronavirus worldwide, Nagoya University of Foreign Studies has already announced that the commencement of undergraduate classes in the new semester of 2020 will be postponed by two weeks from the original time to April 27th. This is an urgent measure taken in light of the most critical situation we have had to confront since the Great East Japan Earthquake of March, 2011. At this time, we will apply this measure to the Graduate School of International Communication and the International Institute for Japanese Language Education (IJLE).

In Aichi Prefecture, Governor Hideaki Ōmura has just announced an emergency declaration at noon today. Although the spread of the infectious disease in the prefecture has lost its initial momentum, we should remain vigilant since there have been signs of re-expansion in recent days. In that sense, we think it is absolutely necessary that we take this emergency declaration very seriously.

Even under current circumstances, the mission of universities as institutions of higher education remains the same. We are obliged to provide the highest form of education as far as circumstances permit. What’s more, this time we must carry out an additional significant and concrete mission, which is to protect the lives of our students by reducing the risk of outbreaks.

In order to fulfill these two missions, NUFS has decided that the upcoming spring/summer courses starting on April 27th will be offered only in classes using the Internet (online classes, etc.). With this, we are expecting to encounter numerous difficulties since we are stepping into the unknown without having had any previous experience. However, we are convinced that if students, faculty and staff members work together with sincerity, we can always produce satisfactory results.

From now, all faculty and staff members will make various preparations for conducting online classes, such as rewriting the syllabus and improving infrastructure. In the meantime, students will learn to master the skills needed for taking online classes in a quick manner. We will announce the specific details of the Guidelines soon, so we sincerely ask our students, faculty and staff members to access our homepage and portal system regularly.
