The Power Up! Tutorial (PUT) is a unique oral communication course that gives students opportunities for real communication with native English speakers. One important goal of the PUT course is to increase students’ confidence by giving them the opportunity to practice and improve their oral communication skills.
How does Power Up!Tutorial works?
Topic Introduction
Students are given a set topic each week to talk about. From the textbook, they are given key vocabulary words, questions, and conversation strategies to help them think about this topic.
Making a card
Students make a conversation card for class with the key words they need to talk about that topic.
Recursive practice
In conversation groups students have conversations with two other students and a native English speaker. The students change conversation groups two times per class.
Recording
A couple times each semester students record their conversations.
Follow-ups
Students listen to their recordings, transcribe them and look for ways they could improve.
Self-evalution
Students evaluate their use of English, from grammar to conversation strategies.
Correction and Advice
This comes continually from the tutors in the PUT class.

One unique thing about Power Up! Tutorial is that students are able to talk to teachers from countries throughout the world - including Australia, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Students have numerous opportunities to listen to different English accents and learn about various cultures.
Another unique thing about the PUT course is the three students to one teacher ratio. Due to these small groups, students receive individualized attention that adjusts in the moment to their learng needs.
