What is PUT?
Power-Up Tutorial (PUT) is a fun and dynamic conversation strategy class. We provide first year students with the opportunity to discuss world issues and current affairs with native English speakers. We have an excellent teacher to student ratio of three students to one teacher. PUT teachers come from a wide variety of English-speaking countries, so students can learn about a range of different cultures. A typical PUT lesson is 45 minutes long, providing you with the opportunity to develop English conversation skills with a different native speaker each week. PUT offers an engaging introduction to your English education at university

Semester One

Semester One is your introduction to developing English conversation skills at university. To begin with, you will learn the strategies needed to build your confidence and help you participate actively in class. This is achieved through the introduction of essential classroom English and conversation skills. After building a solid foundation of useful English, you will learn to expand your conversation strategy skills which will enable you to participate in a much wider variety of English speaking situations.
In Semester One, you will also be introduced to
Asahi Weekly’ newspaper as a means of practicing your reading aloud and pronunciation skills. The ‘Asahi Weekly’ is a newspaper specifically written for the English language learner. Various articles, usually related to English learning, are also provided in Japanese for you to read at your own leisure. The ‘Asahi Weekly’ also acts as a platform for a multitude of discussions about recent world events and current affairs. By the end of Semester One, you are well on your way to speaking with confidence about a variety of issues and in a broad range of situations.

Semester Two

After a quick recap of the vital English conversation skills developed in Semester One, in Semester Two you will be utilizing your knowledge base from these skills to focus primarily on discussions derived from articles within the ‘Asahi Weekly’ newspaper. By now, you will have the skills and confidence to express your opinions and discuss various real life issues with your classmates and teachers.
