Self-introduction

I’m American, originally from the greater New York City area, but I’ve lived in Louisiana and California. Experiencing a variety of American cultures as I did growing up taught me a lot about how Americans from different regions think about America and the world. It greatly influenced my view of the world.
I have a background in the performing arts, including theater, broadcasting, and commercial production. I worked as a full-time radio announcer while I studied for my university degrees in English, history and linguistics.

Pikachu

I came to Japan in 1992 to teach English.
After teaching full-time at Nanzan University, I began teaching full-time at NUFS in 1998 as associate professor in the Dept of British & American Studies, where I have served as director of the Speaking Lab, director of the English Profile research program, producer of the NUFS Podcast and producer of the current NUFS NOW video series. I am the author of several textbooks, most recently Nice Talking with You 1 & 2, published by Cambridge University Press.

Class Introduction

I teach several classes, including seminars in American studies, Movies & American Popular Culture, Global Issues, and English media production. Perhaps the most challenging class I offer my students is the Introduction to American Studies. In that class, we use iPads for note-taking, presenting, participating in instant polls, and reviewing material with online, instant feedback. Content includes current issues in the USA like racial tension, immigration, health care, American values, and political beliefs. Students learn collaborative skills and digital interaction that will be useful when they begin their working lives.

Hobbies

My top hobbies are reading, watching movies, and listening to music. In my home and my office, you can always hear music playing, from jazz to hip-hop to country and pop. I have turned my family into movie buffs like me! My daughter always prefers watching a movie to watching TV programs. When I take a break from these pastimes, I enjoy creating and producing video for social media. I have several YouTube channels and websites that (I hope) help students with their English and help other teachers with their teaching! I also like hiking and traveling with my family.

Comment

I love learning & teaching.
I want to give some life advice to students: Be curious. Ask questions. Challenge yourself.
